I bought a Macbook charger back in May for $29.95, along with the SquareTrade insurance ($8.99 -- they apparently have their hands in EVERY major retailer that sells electronics) that is supposed to cover the replacement or repair of any damage that occurs over a year, knowing that Apple chargers have the nasty habit of coming apart after a few months. Well!

I filed a claim last night on their website because the cable is coming apart and the wires are poking through (yay me for thinking ahead!) and I was immediately denied because the computer took the information I provided and determined that it was my fault, so I was told to call customer service. Just got off the phone with them, they're going to send me a check for $25.95, so I'll have to cover the other $4 and shipping. Not complaining, although I asked why it was only covering it partially when the plan I bought is supposed to cover repairs or full replacement if repairs aren't possible, and the guy (super nice!) told me that they only cover the current market value of an item. :| that was conveniently left out when I bought it (though I'm sure it was hidden in the TOS in legal gibberish).

So just a heads-up to anyone who goes buying Squaretrade insurance, that seems like an important thing to know. I know most insurance companies have loopholes to weasel out of honoring their side of the deal, but this one is pretty interesting. Sounds like you could buy a 1-year plan on something, and if it breaks 360 days into that deal after the value of the item has already depreciated, they're "full replacement" coverage only covers the market value of the item at that time, and not what you actually paid for it. Mine is merely a $30 charger.

Scale that price up on a TV or other expensive electronics that depreciate rather quickly, and I can see how people would end up feeling very frustrated when they're only receiving fractions of what they paid for the original item based on "current market value." ------- ORIGINAL REVIEW: Bought a Macbook charger and the cable has become frayed and the wires exposed. I filled out the squaretrade website questions, never said it was from an accident, but IT determined it was from an accident and therefore not covered. Ah! But it made sure to tell me that if it was just from normal use, it would be covered, which it is.

So now I have to spend call them up and jump through more hoops to get the issue resolved.

Meanwhile the plug is sparking whenever I plug it in. I'll give them a call and see how much they actually back their stuff, or if this is just a scam to milk people out of some extra money.
